In this paper, the output voltage control of a grid-connected single-phase Z-source inverter (ZSI) fed by a photovoltaic (PV) array is investigated. Conventional linear control methods, typically designed based on small-signal linearization around a specific operating point, fail to deliver optimal dynamic performance due to the inherent nonlinearity of the system and continuous operating point shifts. Since the PV operating point is subject to wide variations induced by environmental conditions —such as solar irradiance and ambient temperature—the deployment of a nonlinear control strategy becomes essential. To this end, a nonlinear equivalent sliding-mode control (ESMC) method with fixed switching frequency capability is developed. Simulation results obtained in MATLAB/Simulink demonstrate that the proposed controller maintains system stability while achieving precise output voltage regulation across a broad range of operating point variations.
