With the rapid growth of renewable energy resources and the development of smart grids, microgrids have received extensive attention as one of the most effective solutions for providing sustainable, secure, and economical energy supply. However, the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, uncertainty in generation and load, and the increasing complexity of microgrid operation have further highlighted the need for flexible and intelligent structures. In this context, flexible renewable energy hubs have emerged as a novel solution, playing a significant role in integrating energy resources, optimizing power management, enhancing reliability, and improving voltage security. This review paper examines and analyzes the latest studies and research achievements related to the application of flexible renewable energy hubs in microgrids. The main focus of this study is to evaluate the role of these hubs in improving economic performance, reducing energy losses, increasing system reliability, enhancing voltage security, and promoting operational flexibility. Furthermore, various energy management methods, multi-objective optimization models, stochastic and uncertainty-based techniques, and the role of technologies such as electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and combined heat and power (CHP) generation within energy hub structures are investigated. In addition, the advantages, challenges, limitations, and future research trends in the field of microgrids based on flexible energy hubs are analyzed, and existing research gaps are identified. The results of this study indicate that the utilization of flexible renewable energy hubs can simultaneously improve economic performance, operational stability, grid resilience, and power quality in microgrids, thereby facilitating the development of future smart energy networks.
