In this paper, in order to improve the power quality problems and reduce the cost and volume of UPQC, a lowered switch unified power electronic converter and a local photovoltaic system as an active supporter of DC link in unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) have been proposed. For this purpose, a test system is presented and the required controller for series and parallel filters in both conditions such as with and without photovoltaic system, are designed. Then, in order to reduce the number of switches in the proposed photovoltaic based UPQC, nine-switch converter is introduced. Finally, performance of the proposed UPQC structure is examined with MATLAB/Simulink software. Simulation results for different scenarios show that by using of the photovoltaic based UPQC, when 50 percent sag voltage occurs in grid side voltage, the DC-link voltage is appropriately regulated while load side voltage will be equal to 1 per unit. In addition, due to using of nine-switch converter with lowered switch, cost and volume of system will be reduced.
